An interesting story hit my inbox yesterday and it pertains to Stephen Sprouse. If you remember, one of the best events that I attended this year (so far) was the Louis Vuitton x Stephen Sprouse “Rock on Mars” Exhibition Preview. I was really happy that Marc Jacobs re-released the Louis Vuitton x Stephen Sprouse collection, the Tribute Collection consists of two iconic Sprouse motifs, the graffit and the rose and will be interpreted into Day-Glo shades of pink, green and orange over the Monogram print. And recently Patricia Field also released a mini-collection paying homage to Sprouse. Stephen Sprouse is super famous now but back in 1991 he wasn’t doing that well…
The story is that Stephen Sprouse moved into Chateau Marmont in 1991 for a month but had no money to pay his bill when he was checking out. So Andre Balazs agreed to let him off if he designed some apparel for Chateau Marmont in exchange. A couple of months ago Andre was going through the archives stored in the attic of the hotel and found 6 original sketches by Stephen by accident – all signed and dated. These are never-seen before sketches. Andre had not seen them for years, he was really excited to be re-united with them. Chateau Marmont has re-issued a couple of products that were designed by Sprouse for Chateau Marmont hotel back in 1991, the products are currently available online.
Check out the sketches after the jump…
