Last Thursday, Karl Lagerfeld used the Huangpu River and the sparkling skyline of Shanghai as the backdrop for Chanel‘s pre-fall 2010 runway show. In Chanel’s Paris-Shanghai Métiers d’Art Collection and an accompanying film that made its debut in Shanghai that night, Karl Lagerfeld told WWD on his first trip to Shanghai, “It is about the idea of China, not the reality. It has the spirit of, and is inspired by, but is unrelated to China. It is not authentic like a Peking Opera or something.” The collection featured multiple inspirations: the “Terracotta Army,” Chinese cinema, and the over-the-top opulence of the Imperial Court. The collection features lots of details, embroidery, tweeds, quilting, accessories that dripped from ears and necks, and the traditional Mandarin Qipao gowns. Loved the references to Chinese sartorial history! On a side note, the Chinese conical hats are so cute, can’t wait to see who’ll rock them off the runway haha.
The disclaimer for the movie, “Coco Chanel never came to China, so they imagine the trip she never made, a fantasy of her coming to Shanghai in the Thirties and Forties and during the Cultural Revolution,” said Lagerfeld. “Shanghai has a very special reputation, very different from other Chinese cities.”
