I haven’t been keeping up with the latest runway shows but one that I was told that I must watch was the Rick Owens‘ Spring 2014 show. Leave it to Rick Owens to wow you like he always does with his designs, for his Paris show he sent out a lineup with 40 women for a step routine to showcase his new collection.
According to Style.com, for his inspiration, he looked to stepping, which evolved in African-American colleges as a hybrid of step dancing, cheerleading, and military drill. (Choreographers Lauretta Malloy Noble and her daughter LeeAnet added other elements—Zulu dancing, for instance—to customize the designer’s presentation.) The set was called “grit face,” intended to intimidate the competition. “We’re rejecting conventional beauty, creating our own beauty,” Rick Owens said. Wow, just wow!
