Most of the time I carry two mobile phones with me, other than my BlackBerry I’ve been using the T-Mobile myTouch 4G. Late October I got the smartphone to play with and review, I was quite intrigued with the packaging when I got it. The packaging is unlike others, there’s no cardboard box but instead it comes in a black zipper case which is perfect for traveling, and includes the USB wall plug adapter, USB cable (the white phone comes with a white cable), headphones (with remote/mic), manuals and the phone.
I’ve used quite a few Android phones but this one is extremely fast because it delivers 4G speeds on T-Mobiles super-fast HSPA+ network. Browsing and loading websites is a lot faster, viewing streaming videos is a lot smoother, and quicker when downloading email attachments. The standout feature is the dual front-facing and rear cameras, perfect for snapping pics of yourself or when no one is there to help you and for video chat! Unlike other video-calling solutions on the market that only work through Wi-Fi, the video chat on the myTouch enables you to use it through T-Mobile’s network or Wi-Fi. I’ve used the video chat quite a bit and it works smoothly, sometimes it’s just easier to talk “face to face”. The 5.0 megapixel camera is ok, it does the job but I’m not crazy about the pictures.
I also really like that you create a fast Wi-Fi Hotspot connection using T-Mobile’s advanced data network, not a lot of phones let you tether but this one works smoothly. And one important feature for those that travel a lot internationally like myself is the Wi-Fi calling. You can send and receive calls and messages over a Wi-Fi network using your existing T-Mobile plan. There’s no special setup needed for Wi-Fi calling. That way you don’t need to rack up your phone bill! I’m not going to get a techy but these are the functions that I’ve played with and use. Overall pretty good smartphone with great new features.
The new myTouch is available in the U.S. exclusively to T-Mobile customers for $199.99 (after a $50 mail-in-rebate) with a two-year service agreement and qualifying voice and data plan. The Even More Plus (full retail price) is $449.99. The new T-Mobile myTouch will be available in four colors — white, black, plum or red. For more info visit mytouch.t-mobile.com. Thank you T-Mobile for my new myTouch 4G!
