The Scene
Like many of the walk-up apartments in the neighborhood, this French restaurant belongs to the genus shotgun; it’s long and narrow, with the bar and dining areas lined up front to back. Black-and-white photos (of Brigitte Bardot, and a scruffy Serge Gainsbourg) and vintage Paris Match covers cram the walls so that the rooms look crowded no matter how many seats are actually filled. Couples gravitate to the red chenille banquettes in the back, while 20-somethings perch up front to watch the traffic on the avenue. Bistro standards are the stock in trade; moules frites are particularly popular. The lamb shank is large enough to make you wonder about the age of the lamb. An extra shake of salt does most entrées good. Desserts fall into line with choices like profiteroles and a crêpe Suzette, slicked with marmalade-sweet orange sauce but served warm, not flambéed. — Jennifer Paull, NYMag.com
In a conversation about eats with my friend Aileen, she happened to bring up an all you can eat mussels and fries spot around her crib for $18 every night from 5pm-10pm. Since I’ve never tried it and luv mussels and fries we planned a day out to feast, Aileen, her man, Becky, Christine, B and I headed to La Tour to get stuffed. I normally don’t like to trek that far to eat but she highly recommened this spot, I wasn’t disappointed about the mussells but at the same time not blown away neither. I had about 2.5 and I had to stop, it was definitely filling – the mussells and fries were pretty good (different seasoning). I doubt I would voluntarily go up to La Tour for dinner again but it’s not a bad spot to get stuffed. Peep the pics after the jump…
