Gemma – 07.29.2007 *Dinner*

Gemma – Bowery Hotel
335 Bowery Street
At 3rd St
New York, NY 10003

The Scene
The space is divided into three rooms: a bar at the entrance, a dining room, and a skylit dining space in the back (cue private parties). The look is rustic cool, reminiscent of La Esquina, only with high ceilings, sunshine, and an oh-there-it-is front door. (Design credit goes to Freemans’s Taavo Somer.)

The menu is as easy as any sweet-lipped Italian: pastas, pizzas, prosciutto. The crew in charge (hoteliers Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode) recently brought us The Waverly Inn, which may explain why they claim they’re still in preview mode and are accepting only walk-ins for now. – DailyCandy

Gemma was recommended by B’s friend, his friend raved that the food was really really good, so we decided to try it out with my bro a few Sunday nights ago. The ambiance of Gemma is absolutely gorgeous, the restaurant is very open and breezy. Going with an empty stomach and high expectations, I expected the food to be A+. All three of us thought the food was ok only, but this spot would be great for drinks as the ambiance makes up for everything. The dish that I ordered and thought was very “different” and “creative” was the Salmone Alla Griglia, it came out in a burned wood as a plate and the fish was pretty good. Other than that I would not crave to come to Gemma, but if requested by a friend I would go back and eat again. Peep the meal after the jump…
