Back in March, I was invited to preview Nicole Richie’s Winter Kate Fall 2010 clothing line in New York City. Nicole is the posterchild for modern boho-luxe, and while her fall collection stays true to this aesthetic with easy tops, a flowy dress and kimono-like cardigans, it’s a tinge darker and happily includes more structured pieces. The inspiration, Richie told InStyle.com, comes from the movie From Hell. “It’s about the free masons and Jack the Ripper so it’s definitely about that time [period],” she says. “We have capes and cigarette pants, vests, jackets and blazers. There are cleaner lines and it’s a lot more simple.” Fabrics like crushed velvet, lace and silk help to reference decades-past as does the moody palette of mostly black, off-white, crimson and ink-blue. High points for me had to be the wool coats and the printed silk pieces which, while lacking hanger appeal, look amazingly effortless on the body. Overall, it’s a wearable, sophisticated collection that manages to be cool without taking itself too seriously. Priced from $78 – $595, the Winter Kate Fall 2010 collection will be available starting in August at all major retailers across the country and online.
